 Embedded LINUX for OEMs

Developing new products can be expensive, time consuming, and shadowed by risk. But now, SIXNET offers a sensible alternative – a pre-integrated embedded LINUX platform with robust, agency approved hardware and a wealth of software that is ready for you to use. SIXNET LINUX IPm solutions are pre-packaged into a family of modular industrial controllers – one of which is likely to be just right for you. For situations requiring a custom package, the power-packed IPm subsystem is available for incorporation into your own design.

What is embedded LINUX?
LINUX is the world’s most advanced and progressive operating system. Based upon the mature UNIX operating system, LINUX is the combined work of some of the best minds in the computer world, who have pooled their talents, resources and accomplishments for the common good of all. The result is a computer operating system that continually gains functionality and increased performance. LINUX is serious professional software with major resources behind it. In their 2001 annual report, IBM declared their focus on LINUX with a development budget of $300,000,000.

Embedding Linux in the New Industrial Age
For system integrators, a controller with a Linux core lets them sell as an OEM.
Linux means never having to say “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
by Nancy Cohen of Open Magazine

Embedded LINUX is a feature-rich subset of LINUX, stripped down to include only those elements of LINUX that are useful on an embedded system. For example, embedded systems typically use a FLASH disk in place of a hard drive to store the file system. Embedded LINUX systems transparently support the LINUX file system. (LINUX applications do not know that FLASH memory is in use and your products have the added benefits of intelligent FLASH memory management. Stripped of the overhead of a graphic interface (typically not found on embedded controllers), embedded LINUX boots in just a few seconds and fits into a few Megabytes of FLASH memory. (Contrast this to the bloated size of embedded Windows NT). Embedded LINUX carries any or all of the features needed in any particular products and can run any LINUX software that is suitable and useful on the target embedded system.

Embedded LINUX is high performance software that can be optimized for particular applications by the inclusion of specialized features or real-time extensions. LINUX is a robust operating system that has proven itself to be highly reliable. Embedded LINUX is an open-source operating system. Even if you don’t plan to alter the software, it provides the peace of mind of knowing that you could control the destiny of your projects.
