RM-8INS Usage Tips

The instrumentation analog input module is ideal for one or more of the following applications:

¢

Thermocouple temperature measurements

¢

Volt or millivolt readings

¢

Floating (off ground) 4-20 mA readings

¢

Any combination of the above ranges

¢

For accuracy better than 0.05%

¢

For true differential performance (superior ground loop rejection)

Current Loop Inputs (4-20 mA channels)

A 100-ohm precision current shunt is present in the base of all analog input modules that read 4-20mA instrumentation loop signals. If a module is unplugged, current continues to flow in the loop.

The instrumentation module supports multiple input ranges and must only have this shunt across the input for each 4-10 mA input. Access the shunt selection jumper for each channel by opening the base access door (with the module removed).

Note:
You must set the current shunt jumper inside the base (open the door) for 4-20 mA channels. Current shunts act as fuses if overloads occur (typically from shorted transmitters). These shunts are field replaceable. A spare shunt is stored inside the base access door.

Instrument loops can be protected from over current by using a ST-CL-20M-16H module.
